I’m pleased to post about this great fundraising project for KNTR. It was inspired in some part by my own actions here with Healthy Giving, and it is all in the same spirit – doing healthy things and helping get books to kids! So here’s a bit about a new fundraising project called HIKRZ – Hikers Inspiring Kids to Read Zealously.

HIKRZ is a group of avid hikers who are using their passion to raise money for The Kids Need to Read Foundation. Any hiker in any part of the globe can be a part of our fun and healthy effort to promote childhood literacy. We have committed to go hiking twice a month, no matter the weather, packing a book from the Kids Need to Read book list each time we venture forth. When we arrive at our destination (usually someplace spectacular!), we “plant” our book and take a picture for the Kids Need to Read website. Afterwards, if we find an appropriate kid on the trail to donate it to, the book is given as a gift. We gather sponsors to pledge donations for our hikes, which can be pledged per hike or quarterly. The pledges are donated directly to Kids Need to Read through the donation button on the KNTR website or may be mailed if preferred. Please see our participating hikers’ list if you would like to sponsor one of our intrepid explorers.

We are planning to have Kids’ Book Hunts at the various regional parks in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as special celebrity hikes in the coming months. We hope the Kids’ Book Hunts will not only inspire kids to read great books, but to maintain a healthy and vigorous lifestyle as well.

Please join us in our passionate cause as a hiker or sponsor. What a great way to call attention to two very important lifestyle choices for kids – intellectual health and physical health! (source)

For more information about how you can pledge or even form a hiking team of your own, head to the Kids Need to Read website via the links below.

Make a Pledge for one of the HIKRZ teams

Healthy Giving will be forming a team (my husband, my daughter, and myself – The Hodges Trio!) and we’ll be doing several fun hikes around our neck of the woods in Oregon. Stay tuned for more updates on our hikes!

I received this statement from KNTR’s Executive Director, Denise Gary, after I informed her about my idea for Healthy Giving.

The power of positivity has always been the greatest strength of the Browncoat community. We don’t just think we might be able to do something — we just do it! Healthy Giving exemplifies how the Browncoat can-do spirit leads to great things, in this case, generously using a personal commitment of well-being to reach out and give to a cause for good. The Kids Need to Read Foundation is grateful to Kazia for taking her personal challenge and using it to bring awareness and donations to our fight for childhood literacy.

Kazia, your “kindness is a strength” and we wish you success and great health! Thank you for giving back to Kids Need to Read.

I want to thank Denise for her wonderful words. I also want to thank everyone at KNTR for being such an amazing group of people and helping inspire me to develop this project.
